CYSCP Core Training

We provide Core Training for professionals and volunteers working with children within the city of York area.

If you're new to working with children and young people, then the CYSCP Core Training Offer will progress your safeguarding knowledge from a basic understanding and awareness of abuse and neglect to developing the knowledge, skills and abilities to strengthen effective multi agencies working in York.


CYSCP Awareness e-learning

This course is aimed at individuals in organisations and voluntary groups who work with children and young people, families or adults who may be parents and/or carers, in York.

  • Staff Groups 1 to 8
  • Health staff: Intercollegiate Guidance Level 1
  • Police Staff: relevant for front facing rows

Learning objectives

After completing the course you will:

  • be able to identify the signs and indicators of possible abuse and neglect
  • Be able to explain and demonstrate what to do if;
    • a child or young person makes a disclosure to you
    • you have a concern about a child or young person or about someone who works with children and young people
  • be able to explain how to make a referral to the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) in York

Course delivery

The CYSCP Awareness e-learning course is delivered via the CYSCP E-Learning Portal.

Course charge

The charge for the CYSCP Awareness e-learning course is £15 per person.

This includes all schools and education settings, all early years providers, voluntary sector, private organisations and members of the public. Some organisations are able to access the course free of charge and a list of these are available on the CYSCP Multi-Agency Training page.

If you're undertaking this course or you're a manager asking an employee or volunteer to undertake this course, you may wish to consider in advance what sources of support are available if you or your staff should find themselves affected by the content.

Remember that the course does not have to be completed in one sitting as progress is saved each time and undertaking it in stages maybe more manageable.

Tips for completing the e-learning

  • you can take the course on a desktop computer, laptop or tablet
  • the course takes approximately 60 minutes to complete
  • you need to view and click on all the interactive content to complete the course fully
  • you can exit the course at any time and it will save your progress
  • there is a knowledge test at the end of the course which you need to pass
  • you can resubmit your answers more than once

Repeating the course

It is recommended you repeat this course every 3 years or earlier if needed. The course content will be updated as necessary to take account of local and national policy changes.

If you've completed the previous version of this course (Online Basic Safeguarding Awareness), there is no requirement to complete this new version any earlier than you would normally do so, but you may wish to refresh your knowledge.

Accessing the course

The course is available to access on the CYSCP E-Learning Portal.

Once you've passed the course, you'll be able to access a certificate which indicates you have completed the course. This is a certificate of completion, not a certificate of qualification.

Target audience:

This course is designed for practitioners and volunteers who:

  • regularly work with children and young people directly or indirectly
  • have particular responsibilities for safeguarding children

Course aims:

  • develop knowledge, skills and abilities to strengthen effective multi-agency working in York
  • safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people

Course outcomes:

By the end of the course, you'll have:

  • a shared understanding of roles and responsibilities both nationally and the local arrangements in York for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • an increased awareness of the legal basis of safeguarding and child protection processes
  • an improved understanding of the local protocols and procedures including inter-agency frameworks and assessment processes for York
  • a developed understanding of information sharing within a safeguarding multi-agency context
  • further developed skills in effective multi-agency working and collaboration with partners, including meaningful engagement with children, families and professionals
  • an overview of the role and remit of City of York Safeguarding Children Partnership

It's recommended by the Safeguarding Children York Partnership that this course is repeated at least every 3 years, however your organisation may have different requirements. The frequency on this site is set as 3 years and if you complete sooner your completion may not be recorded.
